A MILESTONE that all parents look forward to is the time when their little one no longer needs nappies.

Most children will be fully day trained somewhere between two and a half and four years.

The key to successful toilet training is to look out for signs that your child is ready.

Some of the cues you might pick up on are:

• Children telling you when they are wet or have a dirty nappy.

• Waiting before they wet or fill their nappy.

• Showing an interest in the toilet.

• Pulling their pants down.

The longer dryer warmer days are best to start toilet training.

Do avoid trying to toilet train your little one when they are unwell.

Allowing your child to run around the house and garden in clothing that is easy to remove will help reduce accidents.

A potty is useful and can be transported easily, though if your child is happy using the toilet then do not confuse them.

You are, of course, your child’s best role model.

When you use the toilet take them with you and talk to them about what we do when we use the toilet. It will then become a normal process for your child.

Once you start it can take up to three-four weeks for your child to be mostly dry.

Though this is an individual journey, being relaxed and patient will help the process immensely.

You may get accidents from time to time - this is completely normal. Be prepared and have a spare pair of undies in your bag if you are out and about.

Praise your child every time they go to the toilet successfully.
