Taking exams is a stressful time in everybody’s life and exceptionally so for the teens in our family.

Short of sitting the exams for our children there is little we can do in the exam hall to influence the result. There is lots that we can do at home, though, to help our children cope with the stress they are under.

Environment is key to successful and meaningful studying. Make sure your teen has a quiet, warm place to study somewhere in the home where they won’t be interrupted. A kitchen table or dining room table is ideal. If this isn’t available a small table in a bedroom can be used.

The time of day your teen studies is key to the retention they will have of the knowledge they are gaining. We all work best at different times of the day. During adolescence biological sleep patterns mean it is natural for teens not to be able to fall asleep before 11pm. Baring this in mind resist the temptation to have them up and studying before you set off to work. Teens need around eight to 10 hours of sleep per night.

If your child has study leave then you can help them to create a study timetable. Help them find a balance with study and break time.

Feed your teen give them brain food with regular non stodgy snacks throughout their study time.

Lots of love and support goes a long way, let your children know you believe in them! There will be times when they need a hug and an encouraging word from those they love and trust.
