Where Was I? (Work in Progress Performance): Griff Rhys Jones at the Old Laundry Theatre

Star of Not The Nine O'Clock News and numerous travel shows Griff Rhys-Jones is a likeable, warm and self-deprecating entertainer, who shared anecdotes about his journeys up and down this country and the far-flung places of the world.

He made no bones about the fact this was the first time he had performed this show and it was a 'work in progress' and that did show through at times. Some of his stories went on too long and there were many digressions.

The first half had some strong comic elements - his tales of abseiling down a cliff in a painful harness, cleaning the windows of a New York skyscraper and, in particular, swimming in the River Tay, all backed up with film clips, were well received.

The second half was less focused. It included an interesting story about filming for Comic Relief but then Griff spent a very long time explaining Colonial, French and German railway development in Africa. It felt like you were attending a history lecture and my attention wandered a bit.

Oddly, despite there being a massive screen available, no photographs were shown during the second half, which was a shame as he was describing some beautiful places.

The show ended with Griff explaining that his goal when travelling was to discover the 'otherness' of other places and his enthusiasm shone through.

Overall, he will have learned a lot from the show about which stories work and which don't. For me, it was an interesting show, but inconsistent.
