The route

Starting from Keswick, follow the B5289 along the eastern shore of Derwent Water.

Turn off right to climb steeply towards Ashness Bridge. Stop here to enjoy one of the iconic Lakeland views - the tiny packhorse bridge with Skiddaw in the background is one of the most photographed views in the National Park.

Continue along the road, stopping if you like to enjoy more views over the lake towards Skiddaw.

Eventually you'll pick up bridleways to the tiny village of Watendlath and the adjacent tarn.

This is where the ride gets serious, with a testing climb that will defeat most riders.

Descend to Rosthwaite and then follow the road to the foot of Honister pass before heading off road again.

Climb across rolling moorland to the top of a steep and rocky path at Castle Crag. Those on full suspension bikes will be in their element on this section!

A mix of narrow lanes and bridleways lead you back along the western shore of Derwent Water.

Head back the start via Portinscale.
