KENDAL Celtic earned a hard-earned point in their crucial bottom of the table battle with Burneside.

Celtic started the first 20 minutes the brighter and went ahead in the fifth minute when Daryl Moffat tapped the ball home from close range.

The Celts then had a goal ruled out when Moffat was adjudged to be offside.

Burneside grabbed an equaliser midway through the first half as Alec Hague made a mazy run through the Celtic defence, firing the ball past Dean Wicks.

The visitors went 2-1 in front as the first half reached its conclusion when Lee McNeill tapped the ball home from close range.

For the second half the visitors were in control as Kendal’s Rob Downey was shown a straight red card for a challenge on a Burneside player.

But the Celts kept going, and Moffat grabbed an equaliser five minutes from time when he scrambled the ball home from close range after a fantastic run down the right from Mike Sharpe.

Burneside could have won it at the death but Wicks made a world-class finger tip save to deny the visitors as the game ended all square.

Kendal United were outclassed by table-topping Appleby as they lost 4-1.

It was a tight game until the half hour mark when a fabulous individual effort from Liam Dent gave Appleby the lead.

Jordan Crawford made it 2-0 before half time, and Neil Dean got the third after a defensive mistake at a corner.

Crawford got his second and Appleby’s fourth before Cameron Stewart restored some credibility to the scoreline for United with a consolation 10 minutes from time.

Keswick kept up their unbeaten mantle with a 6-0 win at home to Staveley United. The goals came from Richard Bannister, Stephen Hilton, Martin Kirkby, Jamie Little, Declan Robinson and Gary Thwaites.

Ambleside United Reserves lost 4-2 at home to Kirkoswald. A James Cranston brace and strikes from Sean Elliott and Ross Kaminski were enough to secure victory.

In Division Two Windermere Social Club were comfortably beaten by Penrith Reserves 5-0.

Meanwhile in the Westmorland Junior Cup, Ibis progressed to the second round with a 6-0 success over Ullswater United, and will face the winner of the Greystoke versus Burneside Reserves tie on Saturday.

Shap picked up a 3-2 win over Keswick Reserves, while Endmoor KGR also made it into the hat for the next round with a 5-2 triumph at Kendal United Reserves.

In the Benevolent Trophy Coniston lost 8-3 to Lunesdale United, who will take on the winner of Dent versus Greystoke in round two.

The second round draw threw up a humdinger of a derby as the two Kendal sides Celtic and United face each other on November 10.
