Ulverston aces shine through in Open meet

ULVERSTON Swimming Club staged its Annual Open Meet at Lakes Leisure Pool and attracted a large entry from a wide area for this popular event with a 22-strong squad from Kendal alone.
Their up and coming nine-year-old star Megan Jones had a highly successful day, coming away with five awards for her efforts.
She opened her score with a brilliant 50m breaststroke and dictated the race with Hannah Kurzyk (Workington) and Megan Rayner (Carnforth) in close contention.
Another fine win for Jones came from the 50m backstroke where she had to pull out all the stops to touch out Carlisle’s Sophie Huggon and Alexandra Airey for the win in a blanket finish.
She went onto capture second place awards for 50m butterfly and 100m individual medley. She completed her tally with another fine swim to take a well earned bronze in the 50m freestyle.
Another outstanding performer was 11-year-old Christopher Stainton, who, despite coming up against the superb Thomas Manning (Fleetwood) still came away with three seconds and a third. His best result came in the 50m backstroke where he matched Manning stroke for stroke and was unlucky to be just touched out of the top spot in another exciting finish.
Emily Reay also got in amongst the awards with her best effort coming from the 12/13yrs 100m freestyle, where she was the only 12-year-old in the top six finishers. Undaunted, she took them on and in a storming finish was just touched of the winners position by Chloe Carr (Copeland) by less than a second.
She too went on to add third place awards to her score from 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke.
Further creditable awards down to sixth place went to Alex Agliolo, Ella Mounsey, Louie Tideswell, Ollie Sergeant, James Williams and Daniel Armstrong.
