Kendal 5

Chester 50

National Division Three North

KENDAL were given a battering at the hands of second placed Chester at Mint Bridge today (Saturday).

The game, which included two minutes silence for Ryan Ward, the Kendal soldier who was found dead in his home last weekend, started well for the Black and Ambers as the home side took the lead seven minutes in.

Kendal were enjoying early pressure in the Chester half and Billy Coxon forced his way over after a trademark rolling maul to give Kendal an early lead. Chris Park missed the conversion.

Four minutes later Lloyd Hayes kicked a penalty after Kendal were punished for crossing to make it 5-3 and in the 14th minute Chester hit the front.

Will Goodwin fed a lovely ball into Liam Gill who had no problems getting past the leaky Kendal defence, and Lloyd Hayes added the extras to make it 10-5.

Park proceeded to miss a couple of penalties which would have put the Mint Bridge side in front on a terrible pitch made muddy because of heavy rain, with Lloyd Hayes missing one as well for Chester.

But three minutes before half time Chester gave themselves a 10-point cushion as Sean Green took the ball beautifully from Lloyd Hayes, and after riding a few challenges he was well-supported by Huw Grundy, who got the try. Incredibly Lloyd Hayes missed the conversion to make it 15-5 at half time.

But Chester were to record 35 unanswered points in the second half as the game turned into a procession.

Lloyd Hayes got the second period off to the perfect start after scoring an easy try after Tom Evans getting past Kendal’s back line seven minutes into the half, and a minute later lloyd Hayes got himself another one to put Chester 29-5 up.

Chester were camped in Kendal’s half and the tries began to flow from the hour mark. Pat Coy got on the scoreboard with another straightforward try, with Lloyd Hayes competing his hattrick three minutes later as Chester stretched their lead to 43-5.

Lloyd Hayes got his fourth try with 11 minutes to go and kicked the conversion to take his personal tally for the game to 35 points as Chester reached the half-century.

Gavin Hughes was sin-binned for Chester with five minutes left, meaning Kendal finished the game with a fluorish as they tried to add some respectability to the scoreline through their forwards, but their efforts came to no avail and Chester ran out 50-5 winners.
