Liverpool FA 1

Ambleside United 2

Association of Northern Counties

AMBLESIDE United picked up a terrific win against the Liverpool FA to progress into the next round of the cup.

As Invitation Trophy holders, Ambleside United represented Westmorland County FA in the Association of Northern Counties Senior Competition against a representative team from the Liverpool FA Premier League.

The home team started well and were unlucky not to take the lead when James Croxton’s header rattled the bar in the fourth minute.

As they settled the visitors took the lead on 13 minutes following battling work in midfield. The ball found its way to Mason McGeechan on the right and his cross found Simon Rawnsley who shot home.

On 30 minutes Liverpool full back Liam Husan was cautioned for a late tackle on Zach Clark. McGeechan was the second in the referees’ book on 35 minutes for a late tackle.

The visitors increased their lead on 50 minutes when Gary Baker shot home from the edge of the penalty area.

Liverpool came close to getting one back on 66 minutes when Dave Cooney shot wide from close range. A minute later the ball was cleared off the line following a goalmouth scramble and the same happened at the other end on 75 minutes.

Clark shot over the bar from close range following good work by Martin Grundy on 78 minutes.

The home side did get one back with two minutes to go when Carl Gargon latched onto a long ball and shot past the advancing Ambleside keeper Richard Carter.

Ambleside will now represent Westmorland in the semi final against West Riding FA.
