CUMBERLAND and Westmorland wrestlers and supporters gathered at Low Hesket village hall for the end of season dinner and awards presentation.

Wrestlers have competed during the summer throughout Cumbria and Northumberland plus a few forays into Lancashire, Durham and over the Scottish border.

A total of 56 venues were planned to have wrestling during the summer but this was reduced to 46 after cancellations due to the wet weather.

Points were awarded for first, second and third places and Victor Ludorum trophies were awarded for seven different categories.

The first winner was Harold Wilson of Selside who had accumulated 45 points from 15 wins in the U12s.

The U15s section went to Sam Wilson of Skelsmergh who accumulated 50 points over the season, with one of his successes being the under eight stones and U15s championship which he won at Killington Sports in early summer.

The most comprehensive winner was Connie Hodgson from Dent, who won the ladies section with 58 points. Throughout the season Hodgson entered 20 competitions and won 19 of them including two at Grasmere, where she was also awarded the trophy for the outstanding performance of the day.

Other awards went to Jack Brown of Haydon Bridge - a winner of the U18s and men’s lightweight trophies.

The middleweight section went to John Harrington from near Cockermouth and the heavyweights went to Andrew Ord from Morpeth.
