WINDERMERE were almost back to full strength for their match against Penrith A after the disappointing turnout last week.

The match started briskly in spite of a soggy pitch and intermittent downpours, which created lots of handling errors and some moments of slapstick comedy.

After five minutes Windermere looked set to score after a break by Sheasby and good handling from Wood and Nield gave Holmes some space, but he was bundled into touch by a last ditch tackle.

A foolish late charge on the Penrith scrum half at the lineout by a Windermere flanker gave Penrith a penalty and they cleared.

Windermere camped in the Penrith 22 and after a Penrith player was sin-binned for tripping, they converted the pressure into points.

A Windermere scrum after 25 minutes followed by three phases and a switch to the blind side put Proctor in for a try wide on the right but the conversion attempt was spoiled by the slippery conditions.

Windermere defended well almost until the end of the half as Penrith kept possession but were unable to break through.

On the stroke of half time, Penrith's Richardson touched down to even the score at 5-5 after ‘Mere’s Holmes failed to collect the ball in the mud.

The second half contained a lot of errors caused mainly by the conditions, and although Windermere spent most of the time in the Penrith half, they were unable to score until the 79th minute.

Penrith gave away a penalty within kicking range and Crawford was able to add three points to the Windermere tally which proved enough to win the game 8-5.

Furness comfortably picked up a 32-8 success over Kendal Seconds, while Kirkby Lonsdale Seconds began their march to reaching positive points with a 24-8 triumph over Carlisle Crusaders Seconds.

Silloth remain second after a tight 11-9 win over Millom to close the gap to leaders Hawcoat Park to six points, with Park’s game at home to Netherhall postponed.
