APPLEBY lost their first game of the season in all competitions as they went down 1-0 to Kendal United in an entertaining game.

Martin Willan gave the home side the lead after 10 minutes with a well-taken goal after a good sweeping move, and United’s policy of man-marking Liam Dent came to fruition.

Both sides had plenty of opportunities, with Appleby hitting the crossbar in the first half as well.

But despite Appleby having most of the ball in the second half, Kendal held on for a victory that will see them play Ambleside United Reserves in the next round of the Westmorland Benevolent Trophy.

The reserve side only prevailed after an exciting 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Lunesdale United.

Lunesdale took the lead from a corner in the first half and Ambleside found themselves behind until the 80th minute, when 16-year-old Ollie Mathieson equalised through a cross-come-shot.

With five minutes remaining Lunesdale once again restored their lead but in the last minute Calvin Moorhead restored parity for Ambleside to make it 2-2 going into extra time.

Not many chances prevailed in extra time, which took the tie to penalties.

All five penalty-takers from each team scored their respective spot-kicks to take the game to sudden death. Isaac Lassay, another 16-year-old, put away the sixth penalty before a Lunesdale player struck his effort over the bar to give Ambleside the win.

Meanwhile in the battle at the bottom in Division One, Sedbergh Wanderers and Kendal Celtic played out a 3-3 draw. Marc Brewer and a Bradley Earl brace got the goals for Celtic, while Sedbergh’s Xavier Baines, David Ferguson and Elliot Oxley were on the scoresheet for the league’s basement club.

The result keeps both sides in the bottom two.

Ben Pool had a fantastic day for Wetheriggs United as he struck five of his side’s six goals in their success over Burneside.

George Burne got the other goal for Wetheriggs, while Burneside’s scorers included Negus Finn and Carl Green.

Ninth-placed Shap caused an upset in Division Two by beating league leaders Carvetii United 5-3.

Penrith Reserves capitalised on the slip-up by beating Endmoor KGR 3-1 to leapfrog the latter and move up to second in the table, five points adrift of the summit.
