Rain ruins Lancashire start
6:36am Wednesday 18th September 2013 in Sport
BAD weather meant only 10 overs were possible on the first day of Gloucestershire’s LV= County Championship match with Lancashire at Bristol.
The hosts won the toss and reduced their opponents to 33 for two before first bad light, and then heavy rain, wiped out play for the day.
Will Gidman grabbed both wickets in an excellent opening spell.
With the final ball of his first over he had Paul Horton caught behind for a duck, Gareth Roderick taking a one-handed catch above his head.
Horton clearly felt the ball had diverted off a pad and walked slowly off, shaking his head.
Worse was to follow for Lancashire in Gidman’s next over as Ashwell Prince, also on nought, had his middle stump uprooted.
That was as good as it got for the home side as Luis Reece and Karl Brown took the score to 33 without further mishap, Brown with the help of two glorious cover driven fours.
Lancashire secured promotion from Division Two on Saturday as they drew with Leicestershire and third-placed Essex drew with Kent.
The runaway leaders need only 12 more points to be champions.
