Bamber Bridge 2-1 Kendal Town
ALISTAIR WADDECAR’s second-half winner consigned Kendal to defeat for the first time in five games and denied Steve Edmondson’s side top-spot in Evo-Stik League Division One North.
Rob Wilson and Curtis Thomson traded strikes before poor defending allowed Waddecar to secure maximum points for the Lancashire side, who had skipper Matt Lawlor dismissed late on.
There was a first start in Kendal colours for Darren Green, replacing leading goalscorer Danny Mitchley who was unavailable with a slight hamstring concern, while Maison McGeechan returned to the bench.
The first opportunity fell the way of the visitors in the 11th minute, Zach Clark’s cross-field ball invitingly played into the box from the right by Wilson only for Danny Coid to fire over.
Craig Dootson was called into action midway through the half, Kendal’s stopper tipping over Lennie Reid’s curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
And the 34-year-old was on-hand to thwart the home side again shortly afterwards, saving Waddecar’s low effort after the visiting defence struggled to deal with Reid’s long throw.
With two minutes of the half remaining, the Mintcakes took the lead through Wilson, who moments earlier had been booked for an altercation with Brig full-back Paul Alexander.
Following a foul on Sefton Gonzales, Wilson’s neat delivery from the left-hand side of the box evaded all runners and covering defenders to sail past a static Adam Stone.
But Kendal’s lead only lasted a matter of minutes as another Reid long throw was only half-cleared with Thomason’s looping header finding the net via the post.
The visitors started the second-half in positive fashion with some neat play in midfield by Wilson releasing Green as Stone stood tall to deny the forward on his former stomping ground.
Brig were on the wrong end of a thrashing by league newcomers Padiham at the weekend but looked to exert some pressure in the second period in a bid to return to winning ways.
Greg Johnstone found himself in the clear on 55 minutes after dispossessing Ross Lloyd only for his goal-bound effort to be hacked away by an alert Niall Cowperthwaite.
But two minutes later the hosts had the lead and once again the opportunity stemmed from the Kendal defence failing to deal with a long throw.
Dootson was unable to gather the ex-Fleetwood winger’s delivery from the left, with the ball falling to Waddecar who was left free to drill home from 12 yards.
The visitors had spells of possession but were unable to create any real clear-cut chances of note in the final half-hour of the contest.
At the other end, Johnstone glanced wide a Matt Mahoney free-kick from the right while substitute Chris Marlow volleyed over when clean through following Stone’s punt downfield.
With five minutes remaining and Kendal searching for an equaliser, Brig were reduced to ten men after Lawlor received a second yellow card for a foul on Green.
From the resulting free-kick, Ricky Mercer header over while the final chance for a leveller fell to McGeechan, who had replaced Gonzales earlier in the second-half.
After a jinking run, McGeechan cut inside but saw his effort drift harmlessly wide as Kendal’s winning run came to an end.
