Kendal Warriors rise high to see off Lockerbie Tornados
Kendal Warriors 106 – 56 Lockerbie Tornados
KENDAL WARRIORS followed up their opening day victory at Carlisle Panthers by blowing away Lockerbie Tornados to mark their first home game of the new campaign with a win.
Despite finishing as the division’s basement boys last term, an early season success for the Scottish side almost denied Kendal the league title, with the home side keen to avoid a repeat.
The Warriors’ defence pressed high early on resulting in numerous break opportunities for Phil Mason and Matt Basedow, who combined for 16 of Kendal’s 25 opening quarter points.
The hosts dropped their high-level pressure defence at the start of the second period but still continued to play with great intensity.
Kevin Mason was proving a handful, with the Tornados having little answer as his physical play wreaked havoc among the visiting defence.
Tom Withnell helped himself to some impressive points on home debut and by the end of the half Kendal had raced to a 53-24 lead.
Despite a healthy lead Kendal stuttered at the beginning of the third quarter, struggling to combine as a team in the early exchanges.
The reintroduction of Mike Smith and Gareth France paid dividends as the pair linked on a number of occasions to establish a 77- 41 going into the fourth quarter.
The Warriors maintained their impressive play into the final stages with Keith McInnes displaying a positive offensive approach in addition to his defensive duties.
The 35-year-old hit a free throw to take Kendal to the 100-point mark, with the hosts scoring an impressive 29 in the final quarter to run out comfortable winners.
Scorers: G France 26, P Mason 21, K Mason 17, M Basedow 16, T Withnell 14, K McInnes 9, M Smith 3, K Arfanis 0
