Rugby Union: Kirkby Lonsdale 23-12 Wigton
FULL-BACK Ryan Terry marked his senior home debut with two tries as Kirkby Lonsdale beat Wigton to move seventh in League North One West.
Terry was the star of the show as Dave Barton also touched down for the home side while David Hanabury and Tom Gardner crossed the line for the visitors.
Kirkby welcomed back skipper Matt Hughes after a six-game absence and were further reinforced by the return of Sam Chesney-Benson, Josh Maddocks and Matt Belshaw.
Despite plenty of rugby on show in the opening half-hour, neither side were able to make the breakthrough, with Simon Dowker a miss for the hosts at attacking line-outs.
Wigton opened the scoring on 37 minutes after a break from Matt Atkinson allowed the number eight to feed Hanabury who crashed over before converting his own try.
However, there was still time for Kirkby to reply before the break, Tom Pickthall successfully kicking a penalty after Wigton were penalised for a ruck offence.
With Wigton leading 8-7 at the break, the game burst into life in the second period as Kirby went in search of their fourth win in seven outings.
The Underley Park side took the lead five minutes after the re-start as Barton finished a move he started with kick behind the Wigton defence.
After the ball was recycled, scrum-half Ben Walker moved the ball left with Barton touching down by the corner flag for an unconverted try.
Barton’s influence on the game was growing and moments later he extended Kirkby’s lead with a drop-goal after finding a yard of space thirty metres out.
Following James Law’s yellow card and some impressive mauling, Wigton regained the initiative as Gardner collected an off-load from Stuart Creighton to cross the line.
Entering the final quarter of the game, Terry provided the spark as Kirkby stormed into the lead – an advantage the home side would hold for the remainder of the contest.
Terry burst onto a pass on halfway, demonstrating pace and power to score his maiden first-team try, with Pickthall adding a further two points.
Kirkby remained solid in defence as Wigton looked to apply late pressure, although the hosts sealed victory with a breakaway try as Terry enhanced his burgeoning reputation.
After impressing in the senior colts side, the youngster made his first-team debut last week in the hefty defeat at Widnes and had the final say as Kirkby returned to winning ways.
Fly-half Barton fired a long pass to Terry who rounded off the move with his second try of the afternoon, with the score taken to 23-12 despite a missed conversion.
