AFTER Ryan Terry starred on his home debut, skipper Matt Hughes highlighted the contribution of the teenage full-back in Kirkby Lonsdale’s pulsating victory over Wigton.

Having started in last week’s thrashing at Widnes, the 17-year-old took centre stage on Saturday and scored two tries as Kirkby ran out 23-12 winners.

And Hughes – who made his return to action after a six-game absence – admits his performances in the senior colts side meant Terry was on the first-team radar for some time.

“Ryan had a brilliant game on Saturday and it wasn’t just the two tries he scored but his all-round performance which was outstanding,” he said.

“It was good for him to get a first-team game under his belt the previous week at Widnes but he was out of position and thrown in at the deep end.

“But he was much more comfortable playing at full-back and considering his age he deserves all the accolades he received after the game.

“He has been impressing in the senior colts so we have just been waiting for him to be old enough to play.”

Hughes was highly critical of Kirkby’s second-half performance at Widnes last time out, claiming it was one of the worst showings he can recall.

However, victory over Wigton sees the Underley Park club sit seventh in League North One West, with the 29-year-old second row eyeing an upset this weekend.

“It was pleasing to get the win against a good Wigton and turn it around after what happened at Widnes the previous week,” he added.

“All 18 players were excellent with everyone playing their part – good to see the telling off on Saturday and Tuesday paid off.

“We have a very tough game this weekend down at league leaders Wirral but it was a close encounter at our place earlier in the season.

“We’ll head there with a similar side to Saturday, feeling positive and looking to cause an upset.”
