FOLLOWING a successful trial, Kirkby Lonsdale’s Brendan Cleary will play fly-half for the North of England under-18 squad later this month in the presence of national selectors.

Cleary will now represent North of England in a warm-up game versus Leeds Carnegie on January 26 before games on February 21 and 23 against the South and Midlands divisions respectively.

The 17-year-old – a senior colt at Underley Park – first joined Kirkby Lonsdale at the age of four and has since played for all relevant age groups.

Through his mother’s nationality, Cleary – who captained Cumbria under-18s last year against Durham, Northumberland and Cheshire – has represented America under-16s against England, Wales and Belgium.
