WINDERMERE starlet Adam Chapman played a pivotal role as England’s young men won the annual Costa Ballena Quadrangular tournament in Spain for the first time since 2006.

Following an England A training week in Morocco in November, the 18-year-old made his open-age bow as part of a six-strong team against Spain, German and Finland.

Runners-up six times in the last eight years, Chapman was pleased to contribute to England’s victory in his first taste of international men’s golf – winning four of six matches.

“It was a great honour to win with my country for the first time and nice to play in the men’s team for the first time as well,” he said.

“It was an all-round great experience, especially as I was competing at a slightly higher level than I have played previously.

“I was pleased to win four of six matches and despite not playing at the top of my game I stuck in there and didn’t give up.”

Despite losing their third and final match to the Spanish, England finished half a point ahead of their hosts on games countback – having been pipped by the same margin last year.

After victories against Finland and Germany on the opening two days, England were in pole position going into their clash with Spain, which was lost 5.5 – 3.5.

This meant England, Finland and Spain finished on four points apiece, with England securing victory once the number of game points were calculated – England 16.5, Spain 16 and Finland 14.5.

Chapman made his England debut in July’s European Boys Team Championships in Scotland while also being capped in the Boys Home Internationals last year.

The former Lakes School pupil is the youngest Windermere player ever to have played off scratch.
