SITTING pretty at the top of the league’s goalscoring charts, Danny Mitchley is relieved to be firing again after enduring a mini drought by his own very high standards.

The 24-year-old netted his 21st goal of the campaign on Saturday and his first since Boxing Day, although postponements and injury mean that only equates to four matches.

And while any lingering hopes Kendal had of making the play-offs are now fading fast, Mitchley is keen to maintain his status as the division’s leading marksman.

“It was definitely good to get the goal, I hadn’t scored since last year and it can be frustrating if it drags on,” he said.

“It depends how long it goes on for of course. If it’s a couple of games it doesn’t prey on my mind but if it gets to three, four or five then it becomes tough for any striker.

“So to get back on the scoresheet is good for myself personally but obviously it doesn’t mean that much if we don’t win matches.

“It would though mean a lot to be top scorer at the end of the season. I love to score as much as I can and hope to score in every game if that’s possible.

“If I can be up there until the end of the season then I would be made up with that.”

With Bamber Bridge scoring a late winner, the Mintcakes once again frittered away points in the latter stages of a game, a recurring theme Mitchley believes his side must eradicate.

“It’s frustrating, very frustrating and it’s not the first time it’s happened to us,” he added.

“It seems to be coming too much of a regular occurrence for our liking. We’ve needed to stop doing it for a while but that doesn’t seem to have happened.

“We played better in the second-half than we did in the first – we were garbage first-half to be honest.

“We picked it up a bit but I still didn’t feel we did enough to warrant winning, although once we got the equaliser I thought we should have held on for a draw.”

Now winless in seven games, the fixture list refuses to grant Dave Foster’s side any favours with Kendal facing a trip to third-placed Farsley this weekend.

However, Kendal did record two victories over the Throstle Nest outfit earlier this season, something Mitchley insists will be at the forefront of their opponents’ minds.

“We’ve beaten them twice this season when we were in a better run of form but I don’t see why we can’t go and do it again,” he said.

“They are bound to be a bit apprehensive knowing we’ve beaten them twice already but on the other hand they’ll want to put that right.

“It’s not going to be easy between now and the end of the season with the likes of Curzon Ashton and Ramsbottom to come as well but hopefully we can turn things around.”
