NEW recruit Simon Wilson secured a classy solo win at the Clayton Spring Classic to ensure Kendal-based elite road race team Wheelbase Altura MGD opened the 2014 campaign in style.
In the first major competition of the season, Wilson secured glory by a healthy margin after attacking the leading group on the last lap.
After forming part of an early group of six at the front of the race, team-mate Tom Barras was ultimately edged into fourth by Rapha’s Richard Handley.
“It was a really good bit of riding by all the team – we were good from the off with Tom Barras getting up the road early on and me and Sam Boast following in the chase group,” said Wilson.
“On the last lap I had a little dig just as a chase group got across and that caused enough hesitation for me to open a gap big enough to hold onto for the rest of the lap.”
