KENDAL Town boss Dave Foster admits the fixture list could not have thrown up a better clash as the Mintcakes prepare for their final home match of the season.

After returning to winning ways against Harrogate Railway Athletic, Kendal head to New Mills on Saturday before hosting promotion hopefuls Lancaster City at Parkside Road on Easter Monday.

The Dolly Blues’ involvement in the play-offs remains on a knife-edge with the outcome of the game potentially pivotal in the league’s final standings.

The likes of Danny MacDonald, Rob Wilson, Mike Rushton and Craig Carney have all played for Lancaster in past, with Foster and his assistant Michael Stringfellow also having Giant Axe connections.

“It could be tasty,” said Foster. “A few of the lads in our camp have played down there and vice versa – it’s a game which Stringy and I are really looking forward to.

“It’s a local derby and it’s likely to be a good game, particularly given the circumstance of it being our last home game and Lancaster facing the situation they do.

“They may or may not get in the play-offs and we have a real opportunity to affect that. It’s a good game to finish our home programme with.

“I imagine it will be an open and attractive game with plenty of goals.

“I want to win every game and there is always more spice with bragging rights up for grabs but this one may just be that little bit more exciting.”

Victory against Harrogate Railway Athletic at the weekend signalled Kendal’s return to form after three successive losses – a result which also put pay to a three-game goalscoring drought.

After defeats to Ossett Town, Curzon Ashton and Ramsbottom United, Kendal recorded their 16th success of the season and currently find themselves 11th in Evo-Stik First Division North.

The main feature of the win was a double goalscoring salvo from Mike Rushton – who scored for the first since October – with Foster pleased with the experienced campaigner’s contribution.

“For a while now I don’t think we’ve retained the ball well enough up front and I thought we did that better against Harrogate,” he added.

“Rushy has had to be patient recently but came in, worked hard and took his chances for the two goals really well.

“He certainly should have had another but we should probably forget about that one – I wouldn’t have missed it.”

“He did really well after struggling a bit the last few times he’s come on. What I got from him on Saturday was much more what I expect.

“On the whole it was a very pleasing afternoon’s work. I thought we played really well and I was happy to get three points against a team in reasonably decent form.”
