NEW Kendal Town recruit Mark Jackson is adamant nothing but the highest heights will do this coming season as the marksman embarks on a third spell at Parkside Road.

Last season saw the 28-year-old play a tier up in the non-league pyramid with Skelmersdale United after Tommy Lawson’s side were crowned champions of Evo-Stik First Division North in 2013.

It is hoped the signing of Jackson will go some way to filling the goalscoring void left by Danny Mitchley, who moved in the opposite direction during the close season.

Jackson, who has also enjoyed productive stints at Lancaster City and Clitheroe, insists the Mintcakes’ mindset needs to focus on challenging for honours during the forthcoming campaign.

“Not last season but the season before I won the league with Skelmersdale United and I want the same again,” he said.

“I have not come here to finish mid-table or aim for the play-offs, as players we have got to have loftier ambitions than that.

“Promotion has got to be the aim and that’s certainly what we’ll try and achieve. If we don’t get play-offs minimum then there is no point us being here.

“This club deserves to be in the Evo-Stik Premier Division minimum and we need to be getting up there for the fans.

“The last time I was here the club was in the league above but the fact I’ve played with the boss (Dave Foster) and Stringy (Michael Stringfellow) previously made it easier to come back.

“I know what the two of them are trying to do here and hopefully I can score a few goals and help that become a reality.”

Jackson has made a favourable impression so far during pre-season with his goal during the opening friendly against AFC Fylde followed by a double against West Lancashire League outfit Longridge Town.

And while the experienced campaigner knows he will be judged when the season kicks off for real, he believes it does no harm at all to find an early goalscoring rhythm.

“It’s always good to get the ball rolling,” he added.

“I’ve always tended to sit back a bit too much but I’m making a conscious effort this season to try and get in the box a lot more.

“I’m trying to get as fit as I possibly can so I can do the runs to get in the box which has paid dividends so far but we are only a couple of games in and the bigger picture is the league.

“I switched positions quite a bit when I was here last which I enjoyed but ideally I would like to play down the middle.

“Although there is still some way to go yet, hopefully I can take this form into the league and get plenty of goals on the board.”
