HELM Hill ace Tom Addison and Kendal Athletic Club speedster Rebecca Robinson will come up against some of the world’s best mountain runners when they make the trip to Italy to compete in the IAAF World Mountain Running Championships next month.

24-year-old Addison combined a runners up finish at Witton Park and a third place at Whinlatter Forest with a fifth place run at Sedbergh on Saturday to finish second overall in the British Athletics Mountain Running Challenge.

Addison found out this week he has now qualified as part of Team GB and will race at Casette di Massa, Tuscany, on September 14.

“To be given the opportunity to run against the best mountain runners in the world is a dream come true,” he said.

“I am going to go there and give it my all. I never thought I would get selected for the team so I am going to grasp it with both hands and go for it.”

Addison finished in a time of 49:18 at Sedbergh, a 10km race which included 920m of ascent, and was happy with the manner the race panned out.

“I was delighted with my position in the race to qualify,” he said. “It’s such a massive achievement for me to able to compete in a race of this calibre.

“I felt tired in the race because I have been doing a lot recently. It’s been a tough season and I could feel my legs were feeling a bit jaded but I was pleased by the way I was able to hang in and hold my position to the end.”

Joining him in Italy will be Robinson, for who it was double delight at the weekend as she took victory in the uphill only race and booked her place on the plane.

The 31-year-old was locked in a battle with 2013 World Mountain Running Championship silver medallist Emma Clayton however she slowly edged away from Clayton to cross the line after 39 minutes - 48 seconds ahead of Clayton.

“It will be a huge privilige to represent Team GB,” she said. “I’ve done it before and it never gets less exciting.

“I will put the training in and go out there to represent the country as best as I can.”

Club colleague Sarah Tunstall finished fifth and has been announced as first reserve for the race in Tuscany.
