CLUB captain Marc Brown hopes his team can finish the season with a flurry when Netherfield host second-placed Leyland on Saturday.

The Parkside Road outfit sit in eighth place in Division One of the Northern Cricket League.

And Brown’s squad must claim fifteen points and hope Kendal come away from St Annes pointless if they are to leapfrog their local rivals.

“It would be good to finish on a high note for the supporters,” said Brown. “I think Leyland are one of the best teams in the league. I think Blackpool rely heavily on two individuals whereas Leyland and Darwen are the best across the board.

“Leyland are well led and have a right mixture of youth and experience.

“We are hoping to finish on a positive note and hopefully get a 15 or 12. Everyone likes to finish on a winning note with smiles on faces but it just depends what sort of team rocks up.”

Nathan Chambers and Brad Airey survived 19 deliveries as Netherfield picked up an extra point in a losing draw against Darwen at the weekend, with Brown himself hitting a century.

That came after George Linde and Chris Clarke both enjoyed centuries of their own as the Lancashire club racked up 308-4 off their overs.

“We are not a team who go out to get losing draws but they got a lot of runs,” said Brown. “You don’t see many getting 300 in club cricket.

“I hold my hands up. They batted better and individuals got a good start and maybe we didn’t bowl in the right areas.

“We fed George one bad ball an over and he milked that a little bit but it’s those small margins that make a difference. You are doing a job for the team and one bad ball leads to a boundary which can get a good score for a team.

“If we were going to get those runs it probably had to take three of us to get meaningful scores and I just needed someone to stay with me but every time we got going in a partnership somebody got out.

“You can score ten an over in the last ten overs with wickets in hand but we didn’t have them.”
