Windermere 14 - Workington 36

WORKINGTON moved up to second in the Cumbria 1 table with an away day victory at Windermere.

The Dawes Meadow outfit picked up two injuries in training and one in the warm-up and there were a couple of players unavailable, but went on the offensive straight from the kick-off and scored a penalty with just four minutes into the match.

But Workington attacked from the re-start and their forwards crossed the line.

The rest of the half was a close fought affair, with the referee penalising Workington repeatedly for killing the ball and foul play - leading to two more Windermere penalties.

With five minutes to go in the half, Windermere took a scrum against the head on the 10 metre line and the ball was passed out through the backs. Dawson looped the Windermere full-back and accelerated down the touchline to score in the left corner, giving Ambers the lead.

But on the stroke of half time, Workington were gifted the ball after two turnovers in open play. Their well organised backs broke a couple of tackles to score, bringing the score to 14 -15 at half time.

Workington chipped and chased from the kick off and a slip by the Windermere full back meant that the ball was bobbling, unattended in the Windermere 22.

A Zebras player was quick enough to reach it first and score under the posts.

Windermere suffered two more injuries and players were forced to play out of position.

But with Windermere dominating the set piece and the backs defending gallantly, there was stalemate for 20 minutes, until the depleted ‘Mere defence was breached and Workington added two more tries.
