A 10-year-old Kendal boy has won a nationwide Taekwondo competition.

JJ McMahon has already been competing for three years but this was his first gold medal.

He blew away the competition at the Yorkshire Open Taekwondo Championships on Sunday, October 12.

Competitors are graded on their weight, age and experience but young JJ showed maturity beyond his years to come away with the gold medal.

In the first round of the knock out competition he was 6-0 down but fought back to win 8-6.

He won the final after his opponent committed a technical infringement and was disqualified.

More than 280 competitors from across the UK took part in the open competition and Cumbria sent representatives from Milnthorpe, Kendal and Ulverston.

It proved to be a bumper day for the Cumbrian squad as JJ McMahon and Stephen Grabek took gold, Mark Bennett, Lucy Bennett, Joe Bennett, Daniel Pearce and Rachael Hales won silver and Jasmine Booth and Amelie Harrison claimed bronze medals.
