STAVELEY's Rob Jebb edged out Helm Hill runner Mark Addison by just one second in a nail-biting conclusion to the five-mile long Dunnerdale Fell Race on a blustery Autumn afternoon on Saturday.

Jebb, who runs for Bingley Harriers, finished in a time of 39:36 with Addison hot on his heels after the race on the rugged fells between the Lickle and the Duddon valleys.

Just three seconds split the next three runners as Martin Mikkelsen-Barron beat both Harry Stainton and Sam Tosh.

In total 235 runners took part with just four retirees.

The ladies race was won by Ambleside AC's Annie Conway who stormed out in front and took the win in a stunning 45:06, nearly three minutes ahead of her closest competitor, Heidi Dent of Howgill Harriers.

Some of the younger field ran well with Oscar Meanwell, of Borrowdale Fell Runners, winning the U19 category in 44:19.

Both men’s and ladies team races were won by Kendal-based Helm Hill.

John Atkinson from Ambleside Athletic Club was clear winner in the MV40 category in a time of 42:42 while Natalie Hawkrigg, unattached, won the LV40 in 56:59.

"Thanks to the Blacksmiths Arms and local residents, many of whom are helpers, for putting up with the influx for a couple of hours," said organiser Andrew Gittins.
