CARTMEL Racecourse played host to round eight of the North West Cyclo-Cross League on Saturday, November 8.

Mud, rain and one very steep hill plagued competitors on what proved to be a tough day on the course.

Just fewer than 300 riders from across the region took part in the event, organised by Paul Andrews from the Salt Ayre Cog Set Youth Cycling Club in Lancaster.

The senior men's race was won by Giles Drake of Leisure Lakes Bikes while in the women's and veteren's event, Keith Ashbridge of Velo Club Cumbria came second.

The Furness Flyers team notched up an impressive first and second position on the podium with Scott Fisher and Benjamin Mashiter leading the field.

Elsewhere, in the under 16 category, Pendle-based Cory Edmondson came third.

Alexander Reed, from Salt Ayre Cog Set, said: "A large number of the riders commented that Cartmel was a fantastic venue and the course was one of the best they’ve ridden in the whole of the North West.

"Everyone was made to feel very welcome and, along with Salt Ayre Cog Set’s legendary catering which contributed to the fantastic atmosphere, the day was a great success."
