WINDERMERE golf club's head professional, Simon Edwards, watched his pupil become the master at a Spanish tournament.

Edwards' fellow Welshman Garry Houston stole the show at the Campo de Golf El Saler event as he fired home in a seven under par round of 65.

That score was enough for him to claim victory in the second stage of the European Tour Qualifying School event.

Houston was one of 17 players to progress to the final stage.

His round consisted of seven birdies which was good enough to see off famous Swede and overnight leader Sebastian Soderberg, who was four shots under par at the close.

Simon, who has been Head PGA Professional at Windermere Golf Club since 2008 has been coaching Houston for two years and the win sees him back on the road to playing on the European Tour on a full time basis.

“Garry is an incredible player and I am delighted for him on his success,” said Simon.

“The last round at El Saler was a masterclass in control.

"Every young player needs to realise that they have to find a way to perform under the most severe of pressure and his mental ability and strength is producing great results.

"The processes we have put in place allow Garry to achieve the results he desires.”

A total of 69 players qualified to the final stage, taking place at European Tour Destination PGA Catalunya Resort in north-east Spain this week where the top 25 players plus ties will earn their playing rights for the 2015 Race to Dubai.
