STEVE Whitehead accredited his side's high pressure play for their victory against lowly Eccles.

But despite rolling over a team that lies second from bottom, Whitehead says their opposition's league position was misleading.

Whitehead said: "Despite their league position, Eccles are a top side. There's not many people who come away having dominated from start to finish. They have got a strong front five and they look after their line out very well. They are just two back players away from being upper middle table."

Kendal got out of the blocks quickly and set about looking to dominate from the outset.

This set the tone for what proved to be a comfortable first half for the Hornets and led to them taking a commanding lead early on.

"We started as we wanted to," said Whitehead.

"We wanted to dominate and move them around.

"They were under a lot of pressure when they had the ball and that can sometimes make it look like they have got poor skills but actually we played out part and worked very hard and disrupted them.

"They did have some good possession but they did not hold onto it and some of that was down to our pressure."

Eccles managed to find their footing in the game after half time and at one point reduced the gap between the two sides to just 10 points.

However, Whitehead is not too concerned with his side allowing their opponents back into the game.

"It's very rare that you go and dominate a side for 80 minutes," said Kendal's Director of Rugby.

"In this fixture we went out and slammed our marker down early. In the second half we were playing against a side with a lot of pride and ability so they were always going to have their time."

Glen Weightman put on a faultless kicking display, much to his coach's delight.

"He kicked well," said Whitehead.

"He's probably the outstanding kicker in the league. He started on the bench against Kirkby which isn't the best for his mindset but everyone's allowed a blip.

"His reading of the game was good and his kicking was solid - he ran the game well.

"Nathan Woof was also very good and between tem they executed a good game plan."

Looking ahead to next week's contest against tenth placed Wilmslow, Whitehead is confident.

"If we play to our strengths and we are on out mettle for 80 minutes we are capable of beating anybody in the league."
