JAMIE How, who hit more than 3,500 runs during three spells as Kendal Cricket Club's professional, has announced his retirement from the game.

The Kiwi first signed on the dotted line for the Shap Road club in 2011 before returning for the 2012 and 2014 campaigns.

Stu Parkin was captain during the 33-year-old's spell last season and said he looked back on How's time at the club with great fondness.

"When I first knew we were signing him I built up a picture and read articles online about him which showed he was a top player," said Parkin. "When he arrived I couldn't have met a more genuine, down-to-earth guy who really fell in love with Kendal as a whole.

"He brought a lot of good ideas and team spirit and was a great guy to have around the club as a captain because he was just a fountain of knowledge.

"There we no delusions of grandeur for a guy who has played for his country at Lords. He actually said he felt more pressure when he played for Kendal because he was the one paid player."

In 2011 How hit 1040 runs in 29 games. The following season he smashed 1143 from just 24 games with a stunning average of 67.24 before returning last season to score 1322 runs in 32 appearances, including seven 50s and three 100s.

"We knew we were going to get runs from Jamie," said Parkin, "he either got a lot or fell for a few. Once he was settled at the crease he was difficult to get out."

How played 19 Tests, 41 ODIs and five Twenty20 internationals for New Zealand during an eight-year career.

He will now take on a job with Toyota New Zealand's marketing team.
