LIGHT heavyweight prospect Tomi Tatham says time is his biggest rival after suffering another injury setback.

The Bentham bomber, who spent 10 months out of the ring after fracturing his wrist, faces another six week break from action after suffering a finger injury in his points victory over Elvis Dube at Preston's Guild Hall in February.

And Tatham, who trains under Preston's Karl Ince, admits he is not one for playing the waiting game.

"I'm a hundred-miles-an-hour sort of guy and I hate standing still so picking up injuries like this are my worst nightmare," said the Brixton-born boxer.

"I can't drive because my hand is in a cast so I can't get to the boxing club. I can't really do the full-on fitness training I want to do.

"All I can really do is a bit of light jogging and jump on the exercise bike at the moment. It is very frustrating.

Tatham, who was born in London but moved to Bentham when he was three-years-old, is now counting down the days until he can return to the ring.

The 25-year-old was two fights in to his comeback when he broke his index finger on his right hand during the victory over Dube.

It was a double blow for Tatham who had set his sights on knocking out the journeyman from Derby.

"I really wanted to put on a show and knock the guy out and deliver on what I said before the fight," said the former Lancaster and Morecambe College student who has won seven of his eight professional fights - a defeat to Lee Duncan the only blot on his copy book.

"I started to go to work and caught him with a few big shots and the crowd were loving it. To be honest I got a bit giddy and moved away from what the game plan was.

"Then I caught him on the top of his head and the end of the fourth round and that is when I felt the finger go. In truth, that probably calmed me down a bit and I just boxed sensibly in the fifth and sixth rounds."

Tatham has set himself a May 23 comeback date where he will be hoping to be on the bill at the Guild Hall again - and get his dream back on track.

"That was always going to be my next fight date but I just didn't plan to spend six weeks of it with my hand in a cast," he said. "The injuries are both on my right hand but are not related. The wrist feels really strong at the moment, it is just a blow I have broken my finger."

Tatham hopes to be fighting for an Area title by the end of the year to put him in with a shout of a fighting for a British belt.

"I have dreams and goals and unfortunately the injuries are holding me back at the moment," he added.

"I hope to be fighting for an Area title by the end of the year which will hopefully open up other avenues for me. I'm not getting any younger but I would be very disappointed if I didn't get to fight for a British title at some stage in my career."
