THE third round of the North East and Lakes region Youth Climbing Series took place at the weekend and for many of the youngster, the only way is up!

The Lakeland Climbing Centre hosted the competition which was open to youngsters of all abilities - whether new to climbin or already have some experience.

There are three regional rounds in each of the BMC areas with the top three in each category going through to compete in the Grand Final at Edinburgh International Climbing Arena next month

The Kendal wall event attracted 36 juniors from the region taking part in the fun event competing in five categories - Youth A, B, C, D and E - with separate girls and boys competitions following the IFSC (International Federation of Sport Climbing) system based on year of birth.

Each junior had to attempt three routes in the main hall and three boulder problems in the Den and Marmot Loft. Points were allocated for how high they climbed on each attempt.

The atmosphere in the centre was electric one of the highlights of the day included some amazing climbing from 14 year old local girl, Ellie Cox from Workington, taking first position in the Girls B section.

And there was no separating Kimmy White and Caitlin Pyper in the Girls D section as they finishing neck and neck, both taking 1st position.

BMC Area Youth Coordinator, Ian Walton, and Lakeland Climbing Centre’s Chief Route Setter, Sam Gore, organised the day and said it was a great success.

“I was so impressed with the level of climbing among the juniors and their pure determination, commitment and enthusiasm," said Sam Gore, Chief Route Setter. "The day has been a real success,

"I was particularly impressed by the high level of performance in the Boy B category.”

Simon Bennett, manager of Lakeland Climbing Centre, was delighted to see so many youngsters enjoying the sport.

He said: “It’s great to see that there is such a large depth of talent within the young climbing community.

"The competitors displayed a passion and edge that was exciting and encouraging to watch.

"The Youth Climbing Series looks like it has got a bright future."
