KENDAL Town's season ended with a limp as they crashed to a heavy defeat at home to Scarborough Athletic.

It was a goalless first half with chances for both sides but a combination of lack of killer touch and good defending kept the scores level.

Three second-half goals alongside an early bath for Tommy Watson condemned the Mintcakes to defeat.

Kendal threatened straight from the kick-off through Aaron Helliwell but his shot whistled wide.

Scarborough, who went into the game knowing even a win would not see them climb into the play-off positions, showed why they are towards the top of the league as they hit back with a succession of chances through Ryan Blot, Ben Middleton and Alex Metcalfe.

Then Kendal youngster George Mason was put clear by Jordan Connerton but brought down on goal by Dean Isles. The defender escaped punishment from referee David Underwood and Ricky Mercer sent the resulting free-kick over the bar.

But it was Kendal who undoubtedly had the best of the glut of first-half chances when Craig Carney found Connerton in space.

The hitman rounded keeper Joseph Cracknell and had the goal at his mercy. His lax shot from an angle looked to be heading in but Ben Middleton races back on the line and hacked it away to deny Connerton his 27th goal of the season.

Metcalfe then curled over from the edge of the box and skipper Gary Bradshaw shot straight at Danny Eccles on the stroke of the whistle.

Scarborough came flying out of the blocks and turned the game on its head.

First Eccles was forced into action when Forbes' sliced clearance put him under pressure and he then had to produce a smart save to thwart Blot.

It then went downhill for the Mintcakes as Scarborough scored three in the space of 11 minutes.

The first arrived from a well-crafted Martin Plummer cross from the right on 54 minutes. Thomas Corner rose highest and planted a header to the left of Eccles.

Any chance of a Kendal revival was dashed just two minutes later when Watson received a straight red card for an apparent headbutt on Metcalfe after the pair squared up following a clash.

Middleton then flicked in an inswinging Bradshaw cross before Blot piled on the misery on 63 minutes.

The striker received the ball in the penalty, took a touch and set himself up to smash home a volley.

Kendal found it hard to make inroads in the final moments. Ben Thomas lashed wide and Connerton saw an effort saved as the curtain fell on another season at the Lancaster and Morecambe College Stadium.
