Rugby – Kendal lift Cumbria Cup

Kendal 21, Carlisle 11.

An opportunist try when scrum-half James Gough took a tap penalty and put man of the match Nick McKain away for a 40-yard sprint to the line was all that Kendal offered in the first half against Carlisle side that looked dominant in the forwards and also had very capable and speedy looking backs.

The half-time break worked wonders, however, as the pack awoke and quickly drove over for tries by Mike Capstick and Richard Harryman.

Andrew Boardley converted all three scores and, apart from two first-half penalties by Bobby Sherlock, Carlisle were shut out by strong and sometimes desperate defensive tackling until five minutes from time when their threes finally lived up to their promise and full-back Stefan Helias came into the line to score an unconverted try.

Kendal then held out to regain the cup they last won in 1998.
