STAVELEY'S ROB Jebb has been getting a number of fell race victories under his belt over recent weeks.

The 40-year-old is showing no signs of slowing up as he won Sunday's Kentmere Horseshoe, which is also in its 40th year, at a canter.

Jebb set his stall out from the start and had built up a commanding lead from Borrowdale's Phil Davies as the runners rounded the summit of Ill Bell.

As he strode out in front there was a ding-dong battle going on behind for second as Ambleside's Garry Greenhow caught Davies at the High Street turn.

Greenhow pulled away from Davies on the climb up to Kentmere Pike and made inroads into Jebb's lead but never really threatened the Bingley athlete.

Jebb went on to register his fourth win in the race, crossing the line in 1-31-23, with Greenhow (1-32-28) second and Davies (1-34-43) in third.

Among the South Lakeland runners to the fore in the 350-strong field were Ambleside's Matt Reidy (1-38-46) who was fifth Helm Hill's Paul Aitken (1-38-55) and Nigel Wood (1-40-52) who were sixth and ninth respectively. Ambleside's Chris Lightburn (1-41-33) was second U23 in tenth.

"I led all the way but I did not want to overdo it because of the championship race (Lingmell) next weekend," said Jebb, who is sponsored by Pete Bland Sports and iNov8. "I kept easing off but they kept coming back at me."

Jebb is a recent winner of the Scottish 'classic' race at Alva and also set a new record in winning the fell event at Sedbergh Sports.

The first lady was Charlotte Watson (1-52-08), of Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds, who was 42nd overall.

Ambleside's Sarah McCormack, representing the Republic of Ireland, won the ladies' international title at Snowdon on Saturday for the second successive year.

Now in its fourth decade, the 10-mile endurance race sees participants make their way five miles up the Llanberis Path to the mountain’s summit before running back down. This year more than 700 athletes took part in the event which was won by Italian runner Emanuele Manzi.

Dark Peak's Rhys Findlay-Robinson won the mid-week Blisco Dash fell race in the Langdale Valley in a time of 41-15. Wharfedale's Sam Watson (41-29) was a close second with Howgill's Tim Cowin (41-37) finishing third and first V40. Helm Hill's Paul Aitken (43-07) performed well to finish fifth while Ambleside's Tom Simpson (46-18) was first U23 in 11th.

First woman home was Keswick Kath Spurden (50-34) in 19th while Deeside's Marie Entwistle was second and first LV40. There were 50 finishers.

DUFTON'S Morgan Donnelly was second and first V40 in the latest English championship event - The Bradda Niarbyl race - on the Isle of Man.

The Borrowdale athlete was 31 seconds behind Mercia's Simon Bailey who won the race in 2-09-54 with Matthew Roberts, of Calder Valley Fell Runners third in 2-13-23.

First woman home was Bingley Harrier Victoria Wilkinson in 2-29-59.
