TEN-man Kendal Town booked their place in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup with a stunning victory in a replay against North Shields at the Lancaster and Morecambe College Stadium on Tuesday night.

Following Saturday's 1-1 draw at the Daren Perrson Stadium, Kendal welcomed a healthy and vocal travelling support from the North East and had to battle hard for the win after Sam Bailey was given his marching orders in the first half.

Despite playing with less men, Craig Carney gave Kendal the lead when he lashed home from 25 yards.

It was a back to the walls job at times as North Shields threw everything at the Kendal defence but Will Kitchen pulled off a few vital saves and the visitors wasted a host of glorious chances before Carney sealed the safe passage into the next round - alongside a £1,925 pay packet - with an 89th minute strike.

Boss Michael Stringfellow was naturally delighted, saying: "It was a fantastic team performance. Every single one of them showed great character. Going down to ten men so early on against a good side it is quite an unbelievable result.

"The red card changed the game. They had to come out to score but I thought our shape was outstanding to keep them out and counter-attack.

"I think the biggest thing for us this season has been fitness. We worked hard in pre-season for scenarios like this. The last ten minutes they had to suck it in and there was some outstanding individual performances.

"We need to get a buzz around Kendal. We are doing well in the league but a decent FA Cup would be massive for everyone involved in the club."

The opening stages saw the visitors threaten by Bailey cleared a shot off the line before James Luccock saw his effort smack off the top of the bar.

The North Shields bench were then calling for a yellow card for Carney for a tackle on defender Jack Walker.

But the referee said no and from the resulting free-kick Dan Wilson found space but his touch and volley flew over the bar.

The game's major talking point arrived on 32 minutes when midfielder Bailey was sent off.

There can be little complaints with the decision as Bailey brought down an advancing North Shields attacker as he was last man.

The dismissal seemed to give Kendal added motivation and they took the lead on 40 minutes when Carney lashed an unstoppable shot past Chris Bannan.

Jordan Conneron had a golden chance to double the lead just before half-time but Bannan's feet thwarted the striker after Tom Kilifin's exquisite outside of the left-foot through ball.

The visitors started the second-half spritely as Wilson's shot rebounded off the foot of the post and the follow up shot was hooked off the line as Kendal defended their lead.

North Shield began playing wide to take advantage of extra man and had an opportunity to level on 63 minutes.

The chance again fell to Wilson but Kendal stopper Kitchen stood up well to the test and parried with his feet before an unmarked Ryan Carr then sent a header wide from six yards.

With Kendal camped in own half leaving Connerton up front to fight for scraps, the home side enjoyed a rare foray forward on 82 minutes and should have sealed the win through substitute George Mason, but he blazed over with just Bannan to beat.

Smalley then headed the ball off the line as an equaliser looked inevitable but the victory was secured on 89 minutes.

Connerton broke down the centre and found Mason in the box who dummied to give Carney all the space in the world to sweep home.
