KENDAL Warriors fought bravely but ultimately came up short in their first game following a lengthy Christmas break losing 82-73 to Manchester Magic II.

The Warriors started with sluggish and lackadaisical play which allowed the opposition to race away to an early twelve point lead.

Kendal had to settle into the game quickly before it was too far away from them.

They fell back on their tenacious defence to slow down the onslaught and McInnes, the teams defensive specialist, imposed himself whilst Basedow brought an energising influence when brought on.

Now the Warriors had a foothold in the game and the usual scoring presence of France and show of strength and aggression from Williams and Mason got them fighting back into the contest.

At the half, they kept the game within reach at 44-31.

Kendal's approach to the second half left them ruing their sloppy start to the game.

They showed a determination that surprised the opposition as T. Withnell and P. Mason applied greater defensive pressure.

This dynamic and swashbuckling play forced the Warriors to within touching distance of the home side.

Excellent three-point shooting from Crockford and a fine four-point play from France got the visitors to within two points with only two minutes to go.

The home side, although clearly shaken, had the fitness and athleticism to overcome the Warriors' surge.

The game ended 82-73 but some strong play from Kendal gave them hope as they move deeper into the second half of the season.
