ULVERSTON'S David Heffernan overcame an early puncture to score an impressive victory at this week's Dolphinholme venue, coming in just ahead of the consistent high scoring Sam Clifford.

With Tom Gibbs absent after sustaining a broken collarbone after an MTB mishap at the weekend, the two leading contenders for series honours fought it out over the roads around Dolphinholme, the furthest south event of this year's hugely popular Wheelbase-sponsored Lakeland Lanequest cycle orienteering events.

Ulverston's Heffernan punctured not far from the start, and after a swift repair and a bit of re-planning, continued on his way with a resolve that would see him take a very impressive ten point win over Kendal rider Sam Clifford, who now leads the overall men's solo class after four events.

Contenders Heffernan, Mike Toyn, David Sproston and Dan Noblett are all yet some way behind in the overall standings, but with each holding one event in hand over Clifford, it remains uncertain who will cut the cake at Wilf's cafe in Staveley as Men's solo champion after the final event on July 12.

The Women's Solo champion however is almost certain to be between this week's ladies winner, Jo Cleary and 2015 champion Helen Jackson, who finished third this week behind Rebekka Beedle in her first outing of the year.

George Atwood was the top Junior this week, having only the previous week triumphed in the Generation Pairs class with dad Bruce.

Paul and Jim O'Reilly topped that class this week, leaving them in a clear series lead over Michael and Matthew Fell, whilst the Adult Pairs class saw the Attwood name pop up yet again, with dad Bruce coming in first with returning partner Sally Ward. This leaves Attwood/Ward in second place behind Rebecca amd Matthew Delbridge.
