Kendal defeated Wigton by five wickets to progress into the next round of The Cumbria Cup.

Chris Miller's return of 4-14 restricted the visitors to 178-8, before Wesley Fernando's undefeated knock of 74 off 64 balls guided The Auld Greys to victory as they closed on 179-5 in 37.1 overs.

Wigton, who batted first, made a slow start as both Nico Watt and Mikey Hill were put under a lot of pressure by the opening bowling of Chris Miller and Syed Ali.

The pressure told in the early stages as Nico Watt was bowled for six by Chris Miller as the visitors fell onto 18-1.

However Kendal had to remain patient, as both Angus Harman and Mikey Hill put on a resilient stand, which saw Wigton push on to 50.

Wesley Fernando brought a halt to the visitors' charge after the Sri Lankan all-rounder trapped Angus Harman lbw for 12, while Darren Nightingale claimed the wicket of Mikey Hill, who fell for 35 after being caught behind by Richard Herron.

Wigton, though, began to pull away as Michael Holliday and Tom Meyrick batted well, as the Kendal attack began to toil.

However while Wigton raced to 160,Wesley Fernando broke the dominant partnership after the Sri Lankan claimed the wicket of Tom Meyrick, who picked out Chris Miller.

Once Meyrick had been dismissed, Kendal restricted the visitors as Adnan Ghaus trapped Theo Manihera for LBW, while Chris Miller returned figures of 4-14, after Lewis Little and John Reed were bowled, before the Kendal skipper claimed the wicket of Michael Holliday, who top scored with 69 off 58 balls.

Wigton were restricted to 178-8.

In reply Syed Ali and Shane Hyland put on a first wicket stand of 38. However Wigton battled there way into the game after Syed Ali lobbed the ball into the hands of Jonny Honeyman off the bowling of Ben Purdham before Adnan Ghaus was trapped LBW by Michael Holliday.

Kendal began to feel the pressure when Shane Hyland picked out Tom Meyrick off the bowling of Ben Purdham with The Auld Greys in a battle on 56-3.

However, both Wesley Fernando and Darren Braithwaite steadied the innings as the pressure began to ease over Shap Road.

With Kendal now 78 runs away from victory, Wigton broke through as Darren Braithwaite picked out Michael Holliday off the bowling of Ben Purdham, who returned figures of 3-43.

But Wesley Fernando and Darren Nightingale pulled the game away from the visitors, Nightingale impressing with an excellent knock of 26 off just 19 balls,

Wigton made one last attempt for the win once Nightingale's drive for six was well taken by Tom Meyrick off the bowling of Jonny Honeyman.

However Wesley Fernando and Ethan Ellwood saw the game out as Fernando hit a six to win the game in the 37th over as Kendal closed on 179-5.

Ethan Ellwood posted 10 off seven balls, a good knock by the young player recently signed from Burneside.
