Benjamin Wharton’s 60th minute penalty condemned Kendal to a surprise 1-0 defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Colne at The Pye Motors Stadium.

The Mintcakes created a lot of chances on goal, however the failure to convert their opportunities came back to haunt them.

Kendal started the game on the front foot and could have gone ahead in the early exchanges of the match after Olli Wood forced Colne goalkeeper Nisakhare Aghayere into a save.

However as the half wore on Colne grew into the contest and while they didn’t create any real opportunities on goal, they started to dominate possession.

Despite being unable to convert, Kendal continued to create the better opportunities after Wood’s diving header went wide of the left hand post. Colne themselves created an opening through Joseph Garvin who headed the ball over the bar.

At the start of the second half, Kendal began with more purpose and almost went ahead through Charlie Bailey whose effort rattled the cross bar, while Wood missed a free header on goal after he got onto a good delivery into the box.

However it was the visitors who opened the scoring on the hour mark when referee Chris Porter pointed to the penalty spot after Kendal ‘keeper Will Kitchen brought down Colne’s Kenneth Taylor in the area.

Wharton stepped up to power the ball home into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

The Mintcakes almost equalised moments later through Wood who fired over from the edge of the box, while Colne defended bravely as Kendal continued to press forward.

Colne almost made the game safe after they caught Kendal on the counter attack, however Wharton this time blazed the ball over after being out clean through on goal.

With Kendal desperate for the equaliser they continued to push forward, and were unfortunate not to score after both Adam Freeland and Christopher Lynch saw attempts on goal just fall wide of the post.

In the end despite Kendal’s best efforts the referee blew for full time with Kendal losing their second consecutive league game after the 1-0 setback at Farsley on Saturday.
