Milnthorpe Corinthians 3 v 2 Kendal United

MILNTHORPE Corinthians won the Invitational Trophy for the third consecutive year after an entertaining 3-2 win over Kendal United at the Pye Motors Stadium.

The Cors, who gained promotion from West Lancashire League Division Two last season, competed against a very youthful and talented Kendal United side that had finished second in the Westmorland League Division One last term.

In what was a good advert for grassroots football, the game started at a quick pace after both sides played attractive football on a good playing surface.

Kendal United created the first opportunity after just five minutes when Danny Craig fired the ball into the side netting.

But Corinthians opened the scoring after twelve minutes when Jamie Parkinson slotted the ball home from close range.

The Cors almost made it 2-0 after 23 minutes when Matthew Knipe blazed the ball over the bar, while Kendal United’s Brandon Croskell Robinson saw his effort on goal parried away by Cors keeper Tom Bush.

Kendal equalised on the 40th minute through Craig however the lead was short lived when Leon Gierke drew Corinthians level two minutes later.

In the second half both sides started at a quick pace, however for the early part defences were on top.

Kendal United drew level after Andrew Lockhart's effort bounced off the bar to Craig who headed the ball over the line for his second of the night.

The decisive goal came a few minutes later when Gierke scored his second to give Corinthians the lead again.

Once Corinthians had regained the lead Kendal tried and had good spells of possession but were seen off by a strong Corinthians defence.
