THIS was Super Saturday for Kirkby Lonsdale when they ran in 15 tries to secure the league title.

Kirkby became Champions of the league North 1 West when news reached the club after the game that second placed Birkenhead Park had lost at Northwich. Their twenty two point lead is unassailable with the four remaining games yielding a possible maximum of 20 points.

The dominant winners made their highest score of the season, took their ‘points for’ total past 1000, currently head the table of all the English clubs in all the English leagues with the most wins and bonus points.

In becoming champions Kirkby are unbeaten and racked up 1000 points in the season during this match when winger Martyn Knapton scorched in for the eleventh try; the 15 scored in this match taking the season's total to 164 at an average of just under eight per game.

Kirkby now have automatic promotion to the league National 3 North: the highest point in this great club’s 140 year history.

Kirkby were without second row David Cooper-Dunn and hooker Matt Hoyland who were rested for this match and lost skipper and scrum half Ben Walker early in the first half with a strain.

Matt Hughes assumed the captaincy and flanker Ross Towers came competently off the bench into the scrum half position.

The score tells the story of another one sided event as Kirkby set about doing what has to be done against teams at the wrong end of the table, in the last two games scoring 163 points without reply.

The 15 tries in this match came from just about every position and with characteristic speed, flair, creativity and strength.

To their credit Eccles never stopped trying and they kept their shape but they were over run by an onslaught of total rugby from Kirkby which blew them away and rather than dwell on this game it’s worth having another look at one important statistic.

As they won the Championship with this bonus point winning match Kirkby’s record of winning every game but one with a bonus point puts them at the top of the English list.

Scorers were: Stand-off Dave Barton had 1 but created many more, Leandro Kwiczor second row 2, Harry Huddleston wing 2, Martyn Knapton wing 2, Harry Ralston centre 2, Stuart Storey flanker 1 when in a crowd of bodies he seemed to get the ball down, Alex Rogers back row 1, Craig Galbraith number eight 2, Dan Armistead hooker 1, Tom Pickthall centre 1.

No other club in all the English leagues can match this winning record and this is a remarkable statistic.

Head Coach John Pickthall and assistants Steve Williams and John Orr John Orr and Steve Williams' focus will now be on maintaining the winning record to the end of the season starting with an away fixture against Altrincham Kersal in two weeks time.
