AFTER a blank weekend, cricket enthusiasts are hoping for better weather this week with some key matches in prospect.

Saturday (July 7) Northern Premier League leaders Netherfield entertain Preston and have a realistic chance of collecting maximum points to strengthen their title bid.

Meanwhile, second-placed Kendal are away to Blackpool. Both matches start at 1pm. Netherfield are also in with a good shout for the Thwaites 20-20 title and the next hurdle comes with a trip to Carnforth on Sunday for a match starting at 3pm.

For three days from Monday, Netherfield's Parkside Road ground becomes a Minor Counties Championship venue as Cumberland take on Norfolk.

IT MAY still be early July, but footballers are already preparing for the coming season and Lee Ashcroft's reshaped Kendal Town squad gets its first outing with a friendly at Fulwood Amateurs Saturday.

FELL runners take to the hills for two full days this weekend with the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon. Details of the start are kept secret until the last minute, but anyone wanting to follow the event can stay informed by visiting: www.slmm.org.uk
