Northern washout

NO MATCHES were played in either division of the 3-D Sports Northern Premier League last weekend - but Kendal nevertheless moved up from third to second place in Division One.

Their six points for a rain-affected draw moved them above Morecambe who were on a bye weekend.

With half the season gone both the town sides are in a strong position to mount championship challenges with Netherfield currently top of the league.

This weekend both sides are hoping for better weather and a chance to strengthen their position at the top. Netherfield entertain fourth from the bottom Preston and Kendal are away to bottom side Blackpool.

n CUMBERLAND are due to start their third game of the Minor Counties Championship season on Monday, against Norfolk, at Parkside Road, Kendal.

With their first two games badly affected by rain a win is a must if the county is to challenge for the leadership in the competition John Coxon and Alex Roberts return to the side following unavailability for the last game against Lincs.

Cumberland hope a strong seam attack of Sharp, Gorley, Smith, Craven and Roberts will form the basis of a winning combination.

Michael Raikes will provide a spinning option.

New face to the team will be 16-year-old Jordan Clark, who has just completed a successful season for Sedbergh School scoring over 800 runs and is now looking forward to the challenge of playing at a higher level.

Steve Knox and Darren Clark will again open the batting in what appears on paper to be a very strong batting line up with centurion from the game at Sedbergh, James Smith, forecast to bat at seven.
