KENDAL Hockey's first team bounced back from a 5-2 defeat to Preston last week by putting seven unanswered goals past Bury at the Cinder Ovens pitch at Kirkbie Kendal School.

They enjoyed a strong start to the match as the midfield trio of Aaron Screen, Mark Addison and Nick Davis dominated in the middle of the park.

The home side played at pace and passed the ball around with a conviction that was lacking the previous week.

The opening goal came from a well worked penalty corner. Chris Woodman slammed the ball into the bottom corner with his trademark slingshot. Screen soon made it two as he converted another penalty corner with a strong drag flick.

Jack Kerr then found himself with the ball in the Bury D surrounded by defenders. Without hesitation, Kerr quickly span full circle, negating the closest defenders and wrong footing the keeper.

Kerr then calmly slotted the ball home for Kendal’s third.

The home side’s fourth goal was the goal of the match. Kendal drew out the away team by keeping the ball in their back line. Once Bury had committed enough men forward in an attempt to win the ball, Kendal pounced. Swiftly switching styles, the home side worked the ball up the pitch. After quality movement and passing in all areas of the pitch, Steve Barclay found himself unmarked to finish off a team goal that would have made any coach proud.

Bury started the second half with renewed vigour and crafted themselves a number of scoring opportunities. However, Rob Cartwright was not to be beaten and nonchalantly thwarted any efforts on his goal with indifference.

A scrappy period in the game was ended by Kendal’s fifth goal. Steve Barclay was quickest to react to a loose ball in the Bury D and found the net with devastating reverse stick volley.

Following that Kendal began to dominate the match once again. Man of the match Liam Derome was rampant down the left wing creating a plethora of scoring opportunities. Tyson Barclay showed his pace and intelligence as he scored Kendal’s sixth by outstripping the Bury last man and jabbing the ball home before the advancing keeper was able to set for a shot.

The scoring was completed by Liam Platt when he muscled his way into the D. After having his first shot blocked, Platt forcibly regained the ball and slotted his second effort home showing he was just too strong to be denied.

Kendal are away to Ormskirk next weekend and hope to build on their home form against the team at the top of the league.
