A WEEK on from Kendal Town's FA Cup victory last Saturday and Worksop Town provide the same opposition as the Unibond League fixtures bring the teams together for a quick rematch at Parkside (3pm).
One goal, which officially went down to Worksop defender Andy White, separated the teams in the cup, and Kendal have made the better start in the league, three wins and a draw in seven matches taking them to 10th place.
Worksop, with only one victory, are 17th of the 21 teams and Kendal boss Lee Ashcroft is keen to make sure the sides' respective form is maintained.
Kendal full back Paul Byrne was sent off at Worksop and faces a three-match ban but Ashcroft said: "The lad's bit him on the nose, which the referee did not see, and Byrne pushed him away and obviously he''s been sent off for that and was unlucky."
Ashcroft is hoping to sign a right midfielder in time for Saturday's match, but was not prepared to release his name, and he is also hopeful of retaining central midfielder Callum Warburton for longer than his initial month's loan after talks with his parent club Rochdale.
Meanwhile, the FA Cup second-round qualifying draw takes Kendal to Liversedge, near Cleckheaton, from the Northern Counties East League a week on Saturday.
But before then, Kendal have a midweek league match, this time against Marine, who are likely to be a tough nut to crack despite lying only 16th in the table.
n It was announced this week that Town have sealed a three-year sponsorship deal with their local radio station, which will mean the Parkside ground being renamed The Lakeland Radio Stadium.
Worksop Town............0 Kendal Town................1...
KENDAL Town booked their place in the second qualifying stages of the FA Cup with a 1-0 success in Nottinghamshire.
Ultimately, it required an Andy White own goal at the end of the first half to see Lee Ashcroft's side through but Town's overall performance was always a cut above a Worksop side, who so far have struggled to make an impression following relegation from the Conference North.
Winger Lee Mulvaney had the afternoon's first effort, dragging his shot wide of target following a typical jinking run and Kendal went on to look dangerous with Gareth Arnison and Craig Hobson both going close without testing the Worksop keeper.
The home side had strong claims for a penalty dismissed as centre-half Tony Hallam appeared guilty of shirt pulling and it was Curtis Bernard who headed straight at Kendal keeper David Newnes just moments later.
On 41 minutes Kendal were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and despite striker Peter Wright's effort taking a deflection inches past the post, the ensuing Callum Warburton corner kick was inadvertantly bundled into his own goal by White to give Kendal the half-time lead.
Kendal had the edge at the start of the second half with Hallam venturing forward to force the keeper into a reflex save, while Wright's glancing header failed to justify Arnison's pin-point cross from the left.
As things became increasingly heated, Worksop lost captain Steve Hawes for a second bookable offence and, following a spate of bookings, it was Kendal's Paul Byrne who received a straight red card for retaliation, reducing both sides to ten men Newnes was alert enough to deny White an opportunity to level the scores on 70 minutes and Warburton almost scored a fluke second Kendal goal late on when the keeper's clearance looked to be heading for the empty net.
However, the ball bounced on the line and held up for the grateful keeper to collect.
HOW THEY RATED: Newnes 8, Henry 8, Byrne 7, Hallam 8, Whittal-Williams 9, Fowler 8, Mulvaney 8 Arnison 8 (Clark 80min), Wright 8, Hobson 8 (Woods 70min). Subs: Forbes, Leigh, Bush. Att 248.
L Star Man: Dene Whittal-Williams - another fine, solid display from a defender on top of his form.
