KENDAL Town crashed out of the FA Trophy with a 3-2 defeat at Sheffield FC.
The Yorkshire side are under the spotlight at present as the oldest football club in the world, this week celebrating their 150th year.
Sheffield FC 3 - Kendal Town 2
To mark the occasion footballing giants Inter Milan were due to visit Sheffield's Bright Finance Stadium in a prestigious friendly match yesterday (Thursday), but on Saturday Kendal looked more than capable of stealing the moment with a blistering opening that saw them take a sixth minute lead through winger Lee Mulvaney. He latched on to a Peter Wright pass and, despite appearing to round the keeper far too generously, he was able to find the back of the net with an angled drive.
With the hosts at this stage restricted to long range efforts, Town continued to look threatening, Gareth Arnison having a shot well saved on then moments later lifting an effort over the crossbar.
The same player then had a penalty claim dismissed by the referee.
Sheffield levelled the scores against the run of play Asa Ingle stabbing home following a corner and that is how the score remained at the break.
Arnison took another tumble inside the area at the start of the second half, the referee this time showing an interest, but only to caution the striker for diving.
Sheffield striker Vill Powell then headed wide of target as the ball was swung in from the right, while Kendal felt they had further claims for a penalty when Wright appeared to have his trailing leg caught from behind. Once again the referee remained unmoved.
Full back Gavin Smith rifled home a second Sheffield goal on 64 minutes and Town's frustrations increased as Robert Ward put his side 3-1 up just three minutes later.
In added time Town were eventually awarded a penalty when lively sub Zac Clark was grounded by a clumsy challenge.
Wright converted to make it 3-2.
When the keeper refused to release the ball to prevent a quick restart restart it infuriated the Kendal players and Mulvaney was sent off in the unnecessary carnage.
Play eventually resumed but there was not enough time for Kendal to mount another challenge.
How they rated: Newnes 6, Forbes 6, Byrne 8 (Woods (81 minutes), Hallam 6, Whittal-Williams 6, Cole 6, Hobson 6 (Clark 7 from 60 minutes), Warburton 6. Arnsion 6 (Henry from 80 minutes), Wright 6, Mulvaney 7. Subs not used: Dyson, Wilkes. Attendance: 208.
