HUNDREDS of runners will tackle the annual classic Three Peaks run this weekend.
The strength-sapping 24-mile race from Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough always attracts a large entry, but this year the masses have been swollen by the race also being designated as the World Mountain Race Challenge. Start time is 10am on Sunday.
KENDAL's all-conquering rugby team hopes to round off the season by lifting the Cumbria Cup Saturday. As holders, Kendal travel to Penrith RUFC's Frenchfields ground in buoyant mood to meet Aspatria. The kick-off is at 3pm.
WESTMORLAND FA stages its major trophy, the Sportsguard Senior Cup final, at Kendal Town's Parkside Road stadium tomorrow. Kick-off is at 3pm and will feature a battle of the leagues as Kendal County, favourites to win the Westmorland League First Division, meet Milnthorpe Corinthians, who have just won promotion to Division One of the West Lancashire League.
CRICKET is now in full swing all over the county and key matches in the Northern Premier League Saturday see Netherfield away to Darwen and Kendal away to Fleetwood. For local spectators the best option is probably the Westmorland League First Division clash between Burneside and Milnthorpe.
