A LATE penalty was not enough to save Kendal Town from their second pre-season defeat as the Parkside Road side went down 2-1 to Hyde United.
In a game that bore more than a passing resemblance to last Friday’s 4-0 defeat against Carlisle, two second half goals from the visitors proved to be just enough to hand the Greater-Manchester side victory.
While Hyde striker James Dean had rounded Kendal keeper David Newnes only to then miss-control in the opening minutes, as in the Carlisle game, Kendal gave a good account of themselves in the first half.
Lee Ashcroft and Alex Taylor looked bright up-front for Town and both had efforts on goal, with Taylor producing a fantastic save from the visiting keeper after being cleverly played in by Ashcroft.
However with the second half less than five minutes old, Mathew Tipton (47) shot on the turn to put the visitors ahead. Kendal pressed for an equaliser with Carl Osman and substitute Craig Hobson both going close.
However, after one move broke down the Blue Square North side countered and scored on the break, Chris Sim finishing neatly in the 75th minute.
Kendal to their credit continued to press and in the 84 minute they were rewarded as Ian Kilford was fouled in the area and left Gareth Arnison to convert the penalty. Sensing a late comeback Town steamed forward, with local lad Zach Clark - on as a substitute - going very close for the home side.
Unfortunately time ran out for Kendal as Hyde hung on to claim the win.
